For real… who knew? This unusual recipe is both creamy AND refreshing. For some reason these two flavors meld together into an extremely mild flavor, a deliciously drinkable antioxidant feast. The watermelon and the raw cacao don’t clash with each other at all, as one might think.

And with both these foods having some reputation for enhancing circulation and cardiovascular function, as well one’s amorous sensibilities…not a bad beverage to drink as a libido-enhancer. :D

The perfume of rose infused with the sweetness of watermelon and the tartness of raspberries… it’s a deliciously romantic marriage. Simple, easy, a feast for the eyes, and a heady experience for the remaining senses. This recipe makes enough for one…but you know you’re going to have to double it for a special *someone* to share with!

Perfect for a raw potluck — just make a few and place all around the table. How beautiful! Everyone will love it… and you can blame me if the love-energy starts to get a little out of hand. :D

Two Raw Recipes with Moscato Wine From Samos

Marinated Fruit Salad

If you want to jack up the heavenly aroma and alluring flavor, pour a 1 oz. shot of muscat dessert wine over top. The famous Muscato from Samos, which I grew up on (that may explain a few things…heh), has been called “nectar of the gods” for ages, and deservedly so. And it goes beautifully with watermelon.

On Samos, if you take a day-trip on a fishing boat to a neighboring island cove, odds are your breakfast on the boat will be a slice of watermelon and a cup of very light Moscato. Now that’s hospitality I could get used to!

Another Yummy Raw Cocktail For Lovers

And if you really wanna create something special for you and a lover…turn that 1 oz shot into 4 oz., blend up with ice, and pour out into two martini glasses. Um…make sure those shades are drawn first, ‘k?

creamy-watermelon-milk

creamy-watermelon-milk-smoothie

Summer is waning quickly and I woke this morning with a craving for a taste of July in a glass, and this certainly did the trick! It’s sweet, mellow, creamy, and refreshing all at once, and rich with revitalizing nutrients. Plus, a blenderful contains around 20% of an adult’s recommended intake of calcium.

Paired with fresh almond milk, this is a very delicate smoothie that makes for a pretty-as-pink pitcher of refreshment that would be lovely to serve to guests as well as kids.

p

Great After-School Treat For Kids

Remember all those powders parents would add to milk to get their kids to drink it up and supposedly get their daily calcium? Do people still use those things? When a drink like this Creamy Watermelon Milk exists, it’s hard to fathom why those powders are still around. Watermelon Milk looks like Strawberry Quik in a glass… but is a galactic improvement in taste. It’s so dang fresh-tasting, kids will drink up a whole batch in no time. You can even turn this recipe into a creamy, frothy Watermelon Milk Shake!

p

And for Adults…Get Your Intox and Your Detox On At The Same Time! :D

Course, it’s not just for kids. Not only is this a great refresher for grown-ups (in more ways than one, apparently! :D), but it would certainly make a great basis for a raw cocktail. Chill some up with vodka and pour out into martini glass… an instant Watermelon Martini!

blendtec-home-blender-green-smoothie
creamy-whole-pomegranate-smoothie-closeup

As a child, I used to love the tedious ritual of my dad picking out the seeds from a fresh pomegranate and presenting them proudly in a bowl at Christmas time. I always thought of pomegranate as something rarified that one just didn’t eat very often, because it’s such a pain to de-seed.

Then I discovered the pleasure of cutting the pomegranate in half and giving it some good whacks with a wooden spoon to dislodge the seeds. Great! Much easier to enjoy! I could even squeeze half a pomegranate to extract the juice, like an orange.

But when I got my Blendtec blender and discovered that a whole pomegranate (minus the skin) can be blended up into a creamy froth, with no bittery flavor from the pith, I was quite impressed!

By using the fruit whole, now you can easily enjoy the flavor — and significant health benefits — of pomegranate any time you feel inclined to pick a few up at the grocery store!

You can make this smoothie with or without the greens. I’ve provided a few different variations in the recipe below.

Health Benefits of Fresh Pomegranate

Pomegranate is packed with anti-oxidants and is known to be good for the blood. And there’s even a study reporting that, similar to the consumption of watermelon juice, long-time consumption for pomegranate may help combat erectile dysfunction!

Here’s an article highlighting 11 health benefits of pomegranate juice. It states that, based on research findings, drinking pomegranate can:

  • Fight breast cancer
  • Prevent lung cancer
  • Slow prostate cancer
  • Keep PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels stable
  • Protect the neonatal brain
  • Prevent osteoarthritis
  • Protect the arteries
  • Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Protect dental plaque

Today’s Live Green Smoothie Recipe: Fresh Whole Pomegranate with Mango, Spinach, and Watermelon

  • 1 fresh whole pomegranate
  • 1 mango, peeled and pitted
  • 3 heaping cups fresh watermelon chunks
  • 1  cup fresh spinach
  • spring water to 32 oz.
  • 1 cup ice

Put the whole pomegranate, except the peel and any tough bits of pith from the inner core, into the blender. Add remaining ingredients and blend til smooth.

Variations:

  • Make without the greens for a pretty pinkish-orange, cream-textured Pomegranate-Mango-Watermelon Cooler.
  • Use red grapes instead of the watermelon.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon orange blossom water.

This is one of my favorite salads, a staple in the summer! I keep sun-cured black olives on hand (which I’ve marinated myself in cold-pressed Greek olive oil and Himalayan Crystal salt) for just this purpose. It is just bursting with the sweetness of the watermelon and fresh raspberries, which is highlighted beautifully by the rich saltiness of the olives.

a

A Word On Olives

If you love olives, you’re in luck — they are definitely one of the healthiest fruits on the planet! However… if you are consuming olives that have been processed with table salt or kosher salt, you’re bringing in a component you’d be much better doing without. I don’t feed either of those demineralized salts to my family — my kids will attest to the fact that Mortons is relegated to the sidewalk when it freezes over, not to human consumption.

By now, there are numerous un-salted, sun-cured olives available. If you can’t get your grocery story or health food stores to carry them, just break down and order them from an online vendor. Then marinate them in your own fridge in quality cold-pressed olive oil and a quality natural salt, such as my beloved “himmy” salt or even Celtic sea salt.

It is not complex or hard — you just put the olives, olive oil, and a good measure of healthy salt into a glass jar and leave it in your fridge. Then you’ll be able to add olives any time you want to your salads and other raw dishes, without worrying about bloat, blood pressure, and all the icky things that come from consuming de-mineralized salt.

watermelon-smoothie-juice-natural-viagra

Gorgeous liquified watermelon… so easy to make, so easy to drink… and apparently with some viagra-like effects that aren’t to be snuffed at!

Apparently, in addition to being an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin A, beta-carotene, and B vitamins, and possessing more lycopene that tomatoes, it is also exceptionally high in citrulline, an amino acid that our bodies use to make another amino acid, arginine, which relaxes and dilates blood vessels similarly to Viagra and other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction.

A study published in 2007 claims that volunteers who drank three 8-ounce glasses of watermelon juice daily for three weeks boosted their arginine levels by 11%. That’s just 24 ounces a day, just a fraction of what someone might consume in the world of LGS.

One more great reason to enjoy this tasty summer treat.

How To Make A Watermelon Smoothie (a Whole Food Juice)

There’s no need to juice watermelon. The flesh of the fruit is so soft it can easily be tossed into a blender and whipped up into a whole food juice.

If, however, you can get your hands on an organic watermelon, do consider juicing the entire thing, rind and all!

And if you come across the increasingly rare black-seeded watermelon, grab those babies up and pop them, seeds and all, in your blender! Turns out… those black seeds will not cause a watermelon plant to grow in your belly. :)

Watermelon seeds are a good source of both zinc and iron.

  • about 1/4 of a medium-sized watermelon
  • small amount of spring water, just to get the blender to grab the fruit

Cut up the watermelon into chunks that fit into your blender. Add a bit of water, just to get the blending process started. Add a cup of ice, if you’d like.

Pour out and drink up!

Got a hot date coming up? Mebbe blend up the whole fruit… :)

rejuvenator-watermelon-goji-berry-smoothie

rejuvenator-watermelon-goji-berry-smoothie-2

There are so many reasons to make this smoothie a staple in your diet, I hardly know where to begin! It is packed with a freakish amount of beta carotene, antioxidants, and vitamin C, and has a number of other phytonutrients that make it a nutritionist’s dream. Gojis function as a potent “adaptogen” in the body, helping to maintain balance and combat stress.

Watermelon is famed for its help with weight loss, and the Goji Berry is reputed to be the #1 food for health and longevity in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Goji Berries also appear to be an effective appetite suppressant, my theory being that they are just so jam-packed with nutrition that the body gets sated very quickly.

If you’ve never tried Goji Berries, be sure to read more about them here.

Gojis provide an unusual creaminess generally not found outside of expensive ice cream, giving this smoothie great “mouth-feel” and a satisfying feeling of substance. You can use this recipe as a base for so many great smoothies — just add berries, mango, peaches, or any another favorite fruit.

In addition, turn this smoothie into a great Raw Cocktail by customizing it with your favorite libation.

To turn your “Rejuvenator” Watermelon-Goji Berry Smoothie into a Raw Cocktail, just add a shot of rum, tequila, or your favorite flavored vodka.

In these photos: I’ve used my personal fave, Jose Cuervo’s “Black Medallion” dark tequila, made from the agave plant beloved of many raw foodies.
