The beauty of zucchini used in raw smoothies really becomes apparent in this recipe! You will instantly experience how zucchini just disappears, providing a blank background for whatever else you’re pairing with it. In this case… mango… and you end up with a delicious glass of “Essence of Mango”, without any cloying sweetness or undertone of “green”.

Add a bit of fresh parsley or baby spinach, and you have a wonderful Live Green Smoothie perfect for beginners and seasoned Smoothie Addicts, alike!

I’ve taken these photos without the greens added, tho, to show how lovely the mango shines through when paired with the zucchini!

The wonderful use of zucchini in raw smoothies is a discovery that has me as excited as the “Mono-Smoothies” I’ve been playing with of late. Two great new developments in the smoothie realm. Opens up a lot of ways to make great smoothies both inexpensively and from the most pedestrian of ingredients.

papaya-mango-orange-blossom-smoothie-1

This is one of those smoothies that makes me wonder why in the world, when beverages like this are so easy to whip up, do most people spend their days drinking diet sodas and other drinks filled with chemicals, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup. People soooo need to learn how to whip drinks up like this. Who could want to keep drinking Diet Coke and SunnyD when they could be guzzling stuff like this instead???

Giant red papaya with fresh mango and a big of Orange Blossom Water results in an extremely mild, fragrant, wonderfully refreshing smoothie that takes just a few minutes to  put together.

And it’s just *gorgeous* in a glass. Gorgeous!

Dang… my blender’s empty already. Wish I had a double-sized container. One is just not enough when you got three hungry adults in the house.

Fast. Non-fat, except for whatever macadamia nuts you throw on top. Quick. Made from just a few basic ingredients. Filling. Delicious.

If there are a few raw quick-meals you want to learn, something like this should be in the Top 10.

You can whip this up for a filling breakfast that will definitely last through til lunch, if you have a busy morning planned. You can have this on the table in minutes for a quick dinner if you need to be somewhere soon, or don’t want something that will weight you down.

And it would make a lovely dessert. I would serve this simple dish at a non-raw buffet, that’s how delicious it is. And with all the baked, choco-fatty stuff people bring to those things, imagine the delight that everyone will experience that they can enjoy something lusciously delicious, creamy, and sweet… without guilt.

The creamy sauce is made with bananas and juicy medjool dates, without any fat or nut milk. And if you have a Blendtec or Vitamix, you can cycle it through a few times until it’s warm, turning the dish into some seriously soothing comfort food.

Seriously… good eats.

chili-lime-mango-tequila-martini-1

chili-lime-mango-tequila-martini-2

… with a virgin recipe for teetotalers.

It’s been awhile since I posted a raw cocktail recipe, and this evening’s frigid temperatures inspired me to whip up something with fresh chiles and a bit of heat. I picked out a nice fragrant Serrano chile for this Tequilatini, and it gave a delicious flavor of fragrant hot pepper (with not a little bit of heat) to this blend of dark tequila, lime, mango, and a few other goodies. Pick out your own chile… Jalapeño, Habañero… whatever’s your fave.

This would be great in hot weather, too… the heat allegedly makes you sweat and cools you off. But tonight, as the temps sink ever closer to zero… I appreciate the sweating for the warmth of it.

mango-guava-fresh-aloe-vera-gel-live-green-smoothie-1

img_8421

Nu-MEE! Sweet, creamy, slightly exotic and floral-tasting… filled with the alkalizing, energizing power of fresh aloe vera gel, with a vaguely tropical undertone from mango and guava. A wonderful Live Green Smoothie that takes just minutes to whip up, and all the ingredients are so pedestrian I bought them in my own little central-New Jersey neighborhood.

Where to get elderflower water? I have no idea — online, I suppose. Normally I come across recipes for making the stuff at home. But at the liquor store is a liqueur called “St. Germain” which you can pick up to add a bit of exotic flavoring to your beverages (it’s generally sold for adding a few drops to champagne). I love it because it tastes like fresh lychee fruit to me, which I adore. If I come across elderflower water in any store, though, I will be sure to pick it up because these lovely flower waters are spectacular in Live Green Smoothie recipes!

In this case, you can easily substitute Orange Blossom Water instead (and to keep it utterly non-alcoholic for you teetotalers… although this LGS isn’t remotely a cocktail).

This recipe would also be wonderful with ripe persimmon instead of the guava, so do keep that in mind!

The Magical World of Mushrooms

Amongst raw food enthusiasts there is a growing appreciation for the healing and enlivening power of medicinal mushrooms. I am simply fascinated by this topic, and can’t say I’ve even really scratched the surface of it — I’ve barely breathed upon it, more like. But it’s a topic I have begun to research, and part of that research (since I’m very much about applicable, practicable truths rather than intellectual theory) includes the enjoyment and exploration of the qualities that mushrooms impart when you actually eat them.

I recall using some fresh shitake mushrooms earlier this year to make a Warm Live Mushroom Soup, and after just one bowl I could feel my blood change. I could feel it palpably different, coursing through my body as if with remarkably renewed vitality and clarity, and the experience really highlighted to me the potential in mushrooms which I’d heard so much about but hadn’t yet explored in any significant way.

p

David Wolfe’s Top 5 Medicinal Mushrooms

David Wolfe is a huge advocate of medicinal mushrooms, especially those which grow on trees. The top five medicinal tree mushrooms which he recommends for longevity, immune system support, nervous system health, skin, joint health, and improved memory are:

1. Reishi (King of the Mushrooms)
2. Maitake (The Hen of the Woods)
3. Shitake
4. Coriolus (The Cloud Mushroom)
5. Agaricus

I have experience with Reishi, Shitake, and Cordyceps (not a tree mushroom), and have heard good things about Chaga but have not yet tried it. I’ve heard that some of the best Reishis are within spitting distance of where I live, across the border into New York state, and have set the intention of connecting with some good mushroom trackers to learn how to identify and harvest them.

One day soon I guarantee you’ll come across a recipe on my LGS site for a great salad to make with freshly harvest Reishi. :D

Here’s David Wolfe giving his own brief intro into the world of medicinal mushrooms:

Entheogenic Mushrooms

There are some mushrooms that have been used for ages, particularly by indigenous shamans, to expand awareness and to transcend the limits of the normal waking mind. Mushrooms that open these portals of the mind are called “entheogenic”, with Psilocybin being the entheogenic mycophile’s first choice.

Amongst some cultures, Psilocybin are viewed as sacred gifts from nature, and are called “los niños” (the little children) referring to the “mushroom spirits” which gift the taker with helpful visions into both personal and cosmic reality.

13-grandmothersAmongst shamans with an intimate relationship with “los niños” is one of the grandmothers on the International Council of 13 Grandmothers, a healer from the Mexico who works with Psilocybin and assists individuals and groups through healing and transformational journeys using the mushroom.

These amazing 13 indigenous grandmothers have so impressed me that I’m currently working with a group of women in New Jersey to coordinate a public showing of the documentary film “The Next 7 Generations”, about their extraordinary story of coming together and traveling to each others’ homes. Another of the grandmothers is a healer in the jungles of Brazil, working with Ayahuasca as an agent of healing. Fascinating women…

Terrence McKenna is a famous entheogenist with a rich library of personal experience on the subject. Here is the first of a series of videos where he is speaking about the power and significance of Psilocybin:

Angela’s “Shamanic Juju” Raw Smoothie

(A Great Way to Enjoy Both Medicinal and Entheogenic Mushrooms)

There are no doubt many ways to take both medicinal and entheogenic mushrooms — to simple chew them straight, make into soups and slice into broths, or to dry them and take in capsules — but I thought a rich, earthy, psychedelic raw smoothie bursting with a rainbow of life-energy might be one great addition to a mycophile’s recipe library!

  • 3 mangoes, peeled and pitted
  • 2 organic lemons
  • 3 small-medium beets (peel if not organic)
  • 4 organic apples
  • your mushrooms of choice

Add the mangoes to your blender.

Juice the beets and pour into the blender. Then juice the lemons whole, including the peels, and then the apples. Pour this fresh juice into the blender. You won’t be able to add all of the apple-lemon juice, so enjoy whatever’s left over as a refreshing lemonade to whet your appetite for the mushrooms.

Add the mushrooms and blend until well-combined. Drink as-is, or pour over ice. Enjoy all at once, or spread it out over a certain time period, as desired.

Drink responsibly… and enjoy your Shamanic Juju! :D

grapefruit-salad-020

grapefruit-salad-008

While I’m visiting family in Florida this holiday week, I continue to be inspired by the abundance of fresh citrus that’s available. The grapefruits have caught my eye and I decided that a refreshing fruit salad was in perfect order, due to… er… a little excess feasting with the fam today. Heh.

Thing is, while I enjoy the natural bitterness of grapefruit, I didn’t want that bitterness to be the starring role. So, with a bit of mango, pear, and Greek thyme honey, I assembled a delightful cast that contributes both sweetness and a creamy softness to the dish. And removing the membrane from each grapefruit section goes a long way to enhancing pleasure here.

It’s a great little salad. Would love to wake up to it any day, but this evening… it’s serving as a tasty digestif.

Simple. Succulent. Gorgeous. Quick. Slightly exotic. My favorite combos.

You can make this fresh fruit salad in a jiffy, and if you don’t have pineapple or enough mangos on hand to make the fruit cup, you can use a single ripe mango to make the delicious Mango-Orange Blossom Dressing to put over any fruit you have in your kitchen!

Any… no matter what you pour it over, it’s going to be a real treat!

This is the best Margarita recipe ever because it is so dang FRESH tasting! It’s the Live Green magic, I tell ya! Make it and you’ll see the difference… no chemicals, additives, bottled juices or mixes here!

My “Live Green” Lemon Drop Martini is still simply the best lemon drop martini I’ve had, I thought I’d put together a “live green” version of another favorite, and I’m so glad I did! Raw food purists may cringe at the idea of these “raw cocktail” recipes, but I say… the more living goodness the world puts into its body, no matter how, all the better!!!

All I gotta say is, the next time you want the best margarita ever… make this one. And enjoy!
