A great thing about Mono-Smoothies is that, as long as you have at least ONE type of fresh fruit, vegetable, or leafy greens in the house… plus a bit of raw honey (or even dates… medjool dates would make brilliant natural sweeteners)… you can crank out a 32-oz (3-quart) batch of Live Smoothies. Take it with you on-the-go, start your day with it, or even drink it out of a lovely cocktail glass for an evening refresher… and it doesn’t have to be complex in the least.

Fresh herbs make great Mono-Smoothies, and no doubt offer various naturally medicinal benefits depending on which herbs you select.

Check out these four new Mono-Smoothie recipes:

With this one recipe you have a few options — with or without greens, super-lemony or just mild, and dessertly sweet or just sweetly average. Personally, I’m partial to With Greens, Super-Lemony, and Quite Sweet to off-set the lemon… but you pick your fave combo!

Any way you do it up, tho, it’s a great combination. Super way to take advantage of the yummy pineapples and Meyer lemons currently overflowing the grocery bins!

canteloupe-tangerine-martini-2
canteloupe-tangerine-martini-1

If you’re not a drinker, no worries… this is a GREAT combination to enjoy without alcohol! Just wonderful!

There is no tangerine in this delicious martini cocktail, but it tastes like pure tangerine. Made of fresh cantaloupe juice with Meyer lemons and fresh orange juice, this cocktail does not taste like cantaloupe in the least! Some kind of mysterious taste alchemy occurs… and it is one of the prettiest drinks of any kind I have ever seen.

Very delicate. Don’t overdo the vodka. Great for a party. Have enough on hand for a second batch.

raw-macadamia-hummus-recipe-2
raw-macadamia-hummus-recipe-1

This is one of those recipes I wish I’d known how to make back when I first encountered the whole raw & living food world. Would have made staying “high-raw” so much easier.

This “hummus” is made from raw macadamia nuts and a few other utterly pedestrian ingredients. It takes only a few minutes, and what you get is a hummus I actually enjoy better than hummus made from sesame. It has a “cleaner” flavor, it explosive with garlic, tangy with lemon, and makes either a great dish for dipping or a delicious (and filling) raw sandwich spread!

An excellent recipe for rummaging up a quick supper!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did…

Honey-Lemon Raw Smoothie With Fresh Aloe Gel

I am thoroughly persuaded of the healing and healthifying benefits of drinking fresh aloe vera gel, and for this reason the plant is on my Top 5 list for learning how to cultivate at home. Every time I discover another great way to enjoy it in a raw smoothie, I’m blown away by how refreshed and energized I am when I drink it. And I don’t think it’s nearly enough… not when the benefits of aloe are as significant as they are. I always feel so super-charged by it and clear. It’s rich in polysaccharides, it’s alkalizing, makes my joints and muscles feel “juicier”… a good thing.

This raw smoothie is such a pretty thing — golden yellow, a warm honey hue, with the frothy top that fresh aloe always gives. Looks and tastes like a delicious cocktail… without the alcohol! I’d like to have a few blenderfuls of this stuff every day. <<Mental note to self: buy a big bouquet of aloe leaves on next grocery trip.>> If you can’t find them at your local store, just ask the produce manager to get some in. The leaves run anywhere from $.99 to $2.29 in my area.

Here’s a nice little video of David Wolfe free-associating about polysaccharides, aloe… and a few other things. The guy is such a storehouse of so much info.

Last Day for $20 Savings on my LGS Daily Recipe magazine…

The post below was originally published on my “This Raw Life” blog on November 29, 2009: Angela’s “Shamanic Juju” Raw Smoothie (A Great Way to Enjoy Both Medicinal and Entheogenic Mushrooms)

The Magical World of Mushrooms

Amongst raw food enthusiasts there is a growing appreciation for the healing and enlivening power of medicinal mushrooms. I am simply fascinated by this topic, and can’t say I’ve even really scratched the surface of it — I’ve barely breathed upon it, more like. But it’s a topic I have begun to research, and part of that research (since I’m very much about applicable, practicable truths rather than intellectual theory) includes the enjoyment and exploration of the qualities that mushrooms impart when you actually eat them.

I recall using some fresh shitake mushrooms earlier this year to make a Warm Live Mushroom Soup, and after just one bowl I could feel my blood change. I could feel it palpably different, coursing through my body as if with remarkably renewed vitality and clarity, and the experience really highlighted to me the potential in mushrooms which I’d heard so much about but hadn’t yet explored in any significant way.

p

David Wolfe’s Top 5 Medicinal Mushrooms

David Wolfe is a huge advocate of medicinal mushrooms, especially those which grow on trees. The top five medicinal tree mushrooms which he recommends for longevity, immune system support, nervous system health, skin, joint health, and improved memory are:

1. Reishi (King of the Mushrooms)
2. Maitake (The Hen of the Woods)
3. Shitake
4. Coriolus (The Cloud Mushroom)
5. Agaricus

I have experience with Reishi, Shitake, and Cordyceps (not a tree mushroom), and have heard good things about Chaga but have not yet tried it. I’ve heard that some of the best Reishis are within spitting distance of where I live, across the border into New York state, and have set the intention of connecting with some good mushroom trackers to learn how to identify and harvest them.

One day soon I guarantee you’ll come across a recipe on my LGS site for a great salad to make with freshly harvest Reishi. :D

Here’s David Wolfe giving his own brief intro into the world of medicinal mushrooms:

p

Entheogenic Mushrooms

There are some mushrooms that have been used for ages, particularly by indigenous shamans, to expand awareness and to transcend the limits of the normal waking mind. Mushrooms that open these portals of the mind are called “entheogenic”, with Psilocybin being the entheogenic mycophile’s first choice.

Amongst some cultures, Psilocybin are viewed as sacred gifts from nature, and are called “los niños” (the little children) referring to the “mushroom spirits” which gift the taker with helpful visions into both personal and cosmic reality.

13-grandmothersAmongst shamans with an intimate relationship with “los niños” is one of the grandmothers on the International Council of 13 Grandmothers, a healer from the Mexico who works with Psilocybin and assists individuals and groups through healing and transformational journeys using the mushroom.

These amazing 13 indigenous grandmothers have so impressed me that I’m currently working with a group of women in New Jersey to coordinate a public showing of the documentary film “The Next 7 Generations”, about their extraordinary story of coming together and traveling to each others’ homes. Another of the grandmothers is a healer in the jungles of Brazil, working with Ayahuasca as an agent of healing. Fascinating women…

Terrence McKenna is a famous entheogenist with a rich library of personal experience on the subject. Here is the first of a series of videos where he is speaking about the power and significance of Psilocybin:

Angela’s “Shamanic Juju” Raw Smoothie

(A Great Way to Enjoy Both Medicinal and Entheogenic Mushrooms)

There are no doubt many ways to take both medicinal and entheogenic mushrooms — to simple chew them straight, make into soups and slice into broths, or to dry them and take in capsules — but I thought a rich, earthy, psychedelic raw smoothie bursting with a rainbow of life-energy might be one great addition to a mycophile’s recipe library!

  • 3 mangoes, peeled and pitted
  • 2 organic lemons
  • 3 small-medium beets (peel if not organic)
  • 4 organic apples
  • your mushrooms of choice

Add the mangoes to your blender.

Juice the beets and pour into the blender. Then juice the lemons whole, including the peels, and then the apples. Pour this fresh juice into the blender. You won’t be able to add all of the apple-lemon juice, so enjoy whatever’s left over as a refreshing lemonade to whet your appetite for the mushrooms.

Add the mushrooms and blend until well-combined. Drink as-is, or pour over ice. Enjoy all at once, or spread it out over a certain time period, as desired.

Drink responsibly… and enjoy your Shamanic Juju! :D

This is definitely the perfect Lemon Drop — quick-to-make, all-raw ingredients (except the vodka, of course…), and absolutely delish!

My Christmas Wish for this elegantly simple recipe is that you pass it around, make it for your friends and family this holiday season, and start incorporating it into your cocktail culture. And if you mention along the way where you came by the recipe… I would be most appreciative!

And if you want an even better Lemon-Drop… better than perfect… check out my Live-Green Lemon Drop Martini. It’s the Ultimate, because there is just nothing as zingingly refreshing and authentically reviving as an all-juice raw cocktail!

Recipe for: The Perfect Lemon-Drop Martini

My Christmas Present To The Cocktail Crowd

Use the nicest raw honey you can get your hands on… the more delicately flavored, the better!

  • 1 organic lemon
  • 1-1/2 cups citron vodka
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 2 cups ice

Juice the lemon whole, peel and all (which is why it’s important that is be organic). One lemon will yield about 1/4 cup fresh juice, and it will be opaque and creamy, because the whole-fruit juicing captures all the oils and phytonutrients in the pith and peel!

Add the juice, vodka, raw honey, and ice to the blender, and blend til smooth. Pour out into glasses, garnish with lemon if you’d like, and ENJOY!

Makes two generously poured cocktails.

best-creamy-raw-vegan-lemon-ice-cream-2

I’m still laughing with glee over this one… it’s mad-crazy delicious, exploding with lemony zing, and as creamy as can be. And took just a few minutes to make from fresh ingredients and a bit of raw cane sugar. And of course, this is entirely without dairy… a true raw vegan recipe for anyone that loves lemon. And for lactose-intolerant non-raw types who are ever in search of great non-dairy desserts and sorbets.

Make it and eat it straight-away, or pop it in the freezer for later… or make a nut crust and fill it with the ice cream to make a frozen lemon cream pie.

This recipe immediately moves into my “top 10 faves”. I may never be without avocados and organic lemons ever again! :D

This is a gorgeously festive holiday cocktail… with no alcohol in it, so the entire family can enjoy it!

If your Thanksgiving dinner tends to be laden with heavy foods, this beverage is guaranteed to keep you awake and help with digestion. It is *intense* and just sparkling with flavor! But you can also make a milder version for those with gentler palates and inclinations… A table with two pitchers of this lovely cocktail, one mild version and one more intense, would be exquisite!

Happy Holidays, everyone! Wishing everyone the most heart-felt holiday season ever… :D

This tasty smoothie has got ZING and HEAT from fresh lemon juice and lots of fresh ginger root! Woo-hoo! It’s not too sweet… “just sweet enuf”… and you can certainly make it with or without the fresh greens.

Whips up in just a few momentitos… and it guaranteed to perk up your spirits and energy if either is lagging!
