creamy-warm-live-lemony-nightcap-tea

I’m a bit puzzled as to what to call this drink. I mean, it’s creamy like hot cocoa, but warming and with the zesty heat of a nightcap. And it’s made like a Warm Live Tea… Well, it’s utterly wonderful for any of those purposes.

And in fact, it’s absolutely delicious without being heated up. I wanted to guzzle the entire blenderful.

But alas, I was relegated to only a few sips. (The Marginally Raw Twenty-Somethings in the house all drank the rest of it down. )

Though this is all “raw” and non-dairy, there is no almond milk or hemp seeds or cashews added to give the creamy texture. It’s pure avocado and fresh lemon juice, with honey to off-set the wonderful tang.

A real winner. Next snow storm, make sure you have the right ingredients on hand for this one!

:D

My son Curran’s comment while tucking into a second cup of this tea with a friend: “How many pink drinks do you know that are healthy for you? …Pepto Bismol does not count!”

These new Warm Live Teas that I’m making are a big hit at home, and this one is just fabulous! Gorgeously colorful, and so aromatic and soothing.

It’s tummy-warming, the kind of drink that makes for an enjoyable nightcap when you want that warm sensation of a “hug”… and yet it’s all fresh fruit and full of living enzymes and rich in nutrients.

Great way to start the day. Great way to end the day.

I doubt you’ve ever had avocado this way before. And you wouldn’t know that’s what makes it so creamy unless I told you.

:D

Enjoy it warm, like a Warm Live Tea or Hot Chocolate, and enjoy the mild, smooth, cozy, comforting vanilla-ness, a combined sensation that is quite unlike anything else found in the world of raw food recipes.

This is recipe is a keeper. And with just a few utterly pedestrian ingredients, it’s something you can make any time!

Warm Live Teas are similar to Warm Live Soups… they’re smoothies made from raw ingredients, then briefly warmed up without cooking them. But in this case, the teas are sweet. And so delicious.

Instead of having a decaf herbal tea flavored with the essence of fruit, just make a warm tea from the fruit itself!

Here is a very soothing Warm Live Tea made with pear and fresh ginger root, and another one made with delicately aromatic Rose Water. Pear and rose is a classic combo, and it works just great here!

I bet you’ve never had watermelon like this before! And what a great way to enjoy it.

Warm Live Teas are like Warm Live Soups in that they are smoothies made of raw ingredients which are then warmed briefly to a soothing temperature that’s almost hot to the tongue, but comfortable to your skin when touched.

And they are delicious.

While I love cold drinks, I don’t think it’s particularly healthy to drink too many of them, and I know of people who don’t like them at all. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), practitioners often caution against drinking cold beverages or too much cold food, believing that it can dampen the “digestive fire”.

These Warm Live Teas are full of living nutrients, rich in enzymes that are still viable, and made so fresh that the recipe is literally 2 minutes from the time your knife slices open the fruit til it hits your lips with its soothing goodness.

And you will find that there is something unexpected about watermelon used this way… it almost mimics the creaminess of hot cocoa. In fact, I have made watermelon-raw cacao “chocolate milk” before and was surprised to find how well they go together.

But here I have paired Watermelon and Fresh Ginger Root together, as well as Watermelon and Vanilla.

Watermelon-Ginger is extremely warming and robust… it will both soothe AND energize you. While Watermelon-Vanilla is mild, comforting, and mellow.

Don’t let these intimidate you because you’ve never had fresh fruit this way before. Dive in. I know you will love them.

:D

watermelon-avocado-salad-1

I love savory fruit salads, especially when the weather warms up. This one uses just a few completely pedestrian ingredients to give you something that’s both juicy and luscious. My son’s summation: “This salad is awesome.”

You could feast on this quite satisfyingly for supper, but I could have this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Which is convenient, because there’s enough in the portions of this recipe to last a couple days. And it will do well in the fridge. A great salad to keep in the fridge to pick at when you get home from work or the gym, too!

warm-live-celery-root-soup-1

warm-live-celery-root-soup-2

This may very well be my favorite soup. After Cream of Tomato. :)

It’s so simple, quite bland really, in that mashed-potato blandness that gives such comfort. And that’s the point… it’s warming, comforting, and simple. And there’s so much one can do to dress it up and give it more explosive flavor, if that’s what one is in the mood for.

I never cook with celery root, although I’ve had my share of fancy celery root purees when dining at fancy restaurants. And this hearkens to the joy of a celery root puree… except there is no butter. Of course, you can always add a bit of organic, grass-fed butter — the raw police aren’t going to come drag you in for questioning. Hah. I actually love butter and have far more praise to sing in its favor than not. But this recipe uses cold-pressed olive oil. You can also use cold-pressed coconut oil instead, as long as it’s a very good quality. It will give a lovely aromatic quality, and certainly will increase the heat and energy level you will feel after eating.

Here, I’ve dressed the soup up with some finely sliced raw zucchini, red pepper, and green onion. Nothing more. And I feasted satsifyingly on the entire batch for my Sunday lunch.

If celery root has always mystified you up til now, try this one out. It’s as quick and easy to make as a smoothie, and not in the least intimidating!

Bon apetit!

triple-berry-shake-raw-vegan-1

triple-berry-shake-raw-vegan-2

This delicious raw shake is made creamy with avocado, and uses three different berries: blueberry, blackberry, and strawberry. But use whichever combination of berries is handy, fresh, and on sale!

Loaded with antioxidants, naturally low-glycemic, and “rib-sticking” due to the avocado, remember the next time you’re feeling peckish for “I don’t know what”. It’s so tasty and truly satisfying.

And just pop in some fresh greens to make it a Live Green Smoothie!

simple-warm-live-mushroom-broth-1

simple-warm-live-mushroom-broth-2

Two things I like when I’m eating… something warm and something I can enjoy with a fork, not just drink. And this simple broth brings both together, quickly, inexpensively, and very comfortingly.

You can make this broth very mild… or extremely spicy! Make as-is, or jack up with garlic, fresh chiles, and fresh miso or thai curry paste, then top with some thinly sliced veggies and a bit of fresh greenery (shown here with some simple chopped green romaine lettuce leaves, sliced button mushrooms, and some green onion).

So easy! This is a versatile, comforting, grounding broth you can use as a basic recipe for many meals!

There is nothing “creamy” here, but you can certainly blend some hemp seeds into the mixture, or use almond milk to make the broth.

You can use regular button mushrooms to make the broth, or wonderfully healthifying medicinal mushrooms such as shitake, maitake, or chaga if you want a powerful boost to your immune system. And throw in a larger clove of garlic to really get your head clear!

This would be another excellent broth in which to enjoy some raw liver… which is something I’m doing research on right now, inspired by my dear friend Lauren Michelle Kinsey and her passion for it. Her latest blog post mentions it… check it out.

warm-live-raw-vegan-parsnip-mushroom-soup

warm-live-parsnip-mushroom-soup-with-chicken

Shown here with roast chicken added! Warm Live Soups are not just for raw food purists!

This is wonderful soup for when you want something comforting, soothing, grounding, and warming… but which will enliven and nourish you rather than put you to sleep and slow you down.

And although the recipe is “raw vegan”, it’s not just for raw food purists (which I am not)… there are many health-conscious raw food enthusiasts who do include lovingly raised animal products (even meats) in their diet. And this is a great quick base for a soup which can be further enhanced with some leftover roasted chicken, or even bits of raw liver, which has made a recent resurgence in some health-loving circles.

(To wit, my dear friend and former raw foodist Lauren Michelle Kinsey! Do check out her wonderful, sexy, inspiring blog!)

TCM “Food Therapy” For Treating  Candida

This mild, comforting Warm Live Soup is made with fresh parsnips, your mushrooms of choice, and a bit of garlic… all excellent foods for those under the care of a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner who has advised them to eat more of the foods which diminish “damp” and “damp heat” conditions. These conditions are said to promote yeast and mold in the body, often leading to “candida” symptoms. I have more than one client who is under this kind of care and seeking to decrease these symptoms.

The mushrooms recommended by David Wolfe to diminish candida symptoms are “medicinal” mushrooms, with shitake and maitake being the easiest to find in one’s local grocery store, in my experience. But portabellas and criminis (which are baby portabellas) make good grabs if shitakes can’t be found. And you can always add some dried Reishi or Chaga to this recipe for a particularly potent medicinal brew!

(As with all things, do your research and consult your respected healthcare professionals when making food-related choices to turn a health crisis around. My blogging banter is just for entertainment & informational purposes only… :D)
