A raw smoothie with a bit of red wine, this is festive little drink that takes just a couple minutes to whip up. Got some leftover wine from a party, or a bottle of less-than-stellar plonk you don’t know what to do with? This is a great way to dress it up.

One of my recommendations when radically jacking up the raw foods in one’s diet with Live Green Smoothies is to make the 3rd quart of the day be a richer, creamier, more nutrient-packed smoothie, often with raw cacao and hemp seeds. But here’s another alternative, without cacao.

Rich, creamy, substantial, made with fresh pineapple, banana, cold-pressed coconut oil and raw macadamia nuts, this would also make an excellent breakfast on a day you know you’re not going to have time to stop for a mid-morning snack! It will give you endurance and a bit of a nice “rib-sticking” quality, as opposed to a smoothie that goes right through you.

Definitely try this one. It will expand your concept of what Live Green Smoothies can be like!

kumquats

creamy-kumquat-live-green-smoothie-1

Kumquats are abundant and affordable in my neighborhood grocery stores this time of year. Thing is… what to do with them?

Answer: Live Green Smoothies!

Kumquats have a delicious citrusy flavor, slightly exotic, and with a very delicate and pleasantly bitter aftertaste (much milder than marmalade) because they are used whole, including the very thin skin. They make a great addition to a Live Green Smoothie!

Add avocado and you’ve got a rich, gorgeously green shake!

For an added exotic nuance, Orange Blossom Water goes great with this recipe. Delicious!

papaya-lemon-raw-smoothie-1

blendtec-blender-papaya-smoothie

This is the type of recipe that is so easily modifiable and so delicious, it could become all the rage in the mainstream if someone would start passing the word about it and making it for friends and family. It’s just delicately, fragrantly wonderful!

You can add berries of any kind to create variety… you can use Rose Water instead of Orange Blossom Water… you can use banana or pear or fresh orange juice to sweeten the smoothie instead of grapes… and certainly you can add some fresh spinach or parsley to green it up. So many wonderful options!

It would even make a fabulous raw cocktail if you add a shot of your favorite alchoolic libation to your glass.

And in the end… all just wonderful for your skin, tremendously refreshing, extremely mild… and slightly (oh, just slightly) exotic.

My cuppa smoothie, for sure.

raw-macadamia-hummus-recipe-2
raw-macadamia-hummus-recipe-1

This is one of those recipes I wish I’d known how to make back when I first encountered the whole raw & living food world. Would have made staying “high-raw” so much easier.

This “hummus” is made from raw macadamia nuts and a few other utterly pedestrian ingredients. It takes only a few minutes, and what you get is a hummus I actually enjoy better than hummus made from sesame. It has a “cleaner” flavor, it explosive with garlic, tangy with lemon, and makes either a great dish for dipping or a delicious (and filling) raw sandwich spread!

An excellent recipe for rummaging up a quick supper!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did…

Great raw smoothie for skin. Refreshing to wake up to. Energizing before a workout. Soothing in the evening as a nightcap. Add greens for maximum healthification.

(Give yourself a facial with leftovers!)

Make this tasty raw smoothie either without fresh greens:

Or throw some fresh greens in to make it a refreshing Carrot Cake “Live Green Smoothie”:

If you enjoy Carrot Cake, you’ll like this raw smoothie!

Refreshing, mildly sweet, a little bit tart, quite creamy from blended raw macadamia nuts… made with carrots, apple, raisins, good vanilla, and a bit of parsley or spinach if you’d like to green it up. And add extra ice to make a creamy carrot-cake-flavored shake!

Recipe for: ”Carrot Cake” Live Green Smoothie Recipe

(With or Without Fresh Greens)

  • 1 cup of fresh carrots (chopped for measurement)
  • 1 apple (cored if you don’t have a high-powered blender, peeled if it’s not organic)
  • 1/3 heaping cup raw macadamia nuts
  • 1/3 heaping cup seedless raisins
  • 1 cup fresh parsley or spinach (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon quality vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon quality natural salt, such as Himalayan Crystal salt
  • spring water to 32 oz.
  • 1-3 cups ice

Add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth. I went several rounds with my Blendtec in order to get the macadamias nice and smooth, so if you have a low-powered blender be patient and use high-speed.

Vary the amount of ice based on what you want… use just one cup if you want a cool drink. Add up to 3 cups if you want a beverage that’s more like a shake.

Enjoy!

This recipe is for my non-teetotaler readers. Enjoy without booze if you prefer, but the recipe below is for a nice pitcher of antioxidant-rich “Weekend’s Here” festivity.

Made with fresh raspberries and blueberries, this lovely blended vodka “martini” is refreshing and just-sweet-enough.

A nice way to enjoy the end of the work week.

Recipe for: Mixed Berry “Martini”

A Lovely Antioxidant-Rich Friday Night Raw Cocktail

  • 4-5 apples, juiced to at least 1-1/2 cups
  • 1/2 pint fresh raspberries
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries

Add all ingredients to the blender and combine until smooth. Pour into pitcher.

For each batch of “martinis”, add the following to blender and combine until smooth:

  • 2 cups apple/raspberry/blueberry mixture
  • 1-1/2 cups vodka (I used plain, but you can certainly use flavored vodka of your choice)
  • juice from 1 lime
  • 2 heaping cups ice

Pour out into martini glasses and… Chin-chin!

You will be able to make 2 batches.

ginger-fresh-aloe-vera-gel-smoothie-2

One glass of this and I felt warm and ready for… well, for somethin’! A night of dancing, I’d say, if it weren’t already 11pm on a Thursday night. :D

This is a delicious, non-fat, low-cal, energizing drink you can make a few different ways. Made with fresh lime juice and raw cane sugar as I have shown here, it has a kind of mellow “gingerbreadiness” that is just wonderfully wintery and comforting. Make it instead with fresh lemon juice and raw honey, however, and you’ll have a more completely different flavor. Both perky and mellow, but less “dark” in taste.

I also added quite a bit of ice to mine, to give a slushed effect. But you can add just enough to get a chill and enjoy it as a smoothie.

However you do it, this is so light and refreshing… a very nice light beverage to serve to guests. A nice way to introduce your friends (or your self!) to the pleasure of fresh aloe vera gel! Which is definitely one of nature’s most effective natural energy foods. Great for athletes…both for energy as well as to aid in recovery.

Take this one to the gym or dance studio, for sure!

creamy-garlic-portabella-mushroom-dressing-1

creamy-garlic-portabella-mushroom-dressing-2

This dressing is redolent — as they say — with garlic, and slightly sweet from medjool dates. And utterly scrumptious!

If there are dressings that can make restaurants famous… and if I were a restaurant… I suspect this dressing would make me famous. What a fun idea. :)

Ya simply gotta make it. Even if it does look a bit like bentonite clay. But, meh… definitely get over that one. Just add a few colorful slices of red pepper, some red onion, maybe some nice home-marinated, sun-cured black olives, and you’ll have a nicely turned-out salad.

And not only does it taste great, but it’s downright medicinal. With all the garlic and the mysterious magic of raw portabella mushrooms, you’ll feel invigorated afterwards. You’ll clear your head and give your immune system a boost. What a great benefit.

I served this to the marginally raw crowd in my house with some fresh garlic bread made with toasted Ezekiel bread, but you could make some with raw, dehydrated flatbread, or serve it with some organic tortilla chips for a rawish meal.

Fabulous. Can’t wait to make it again. *slurp*
