In that case, a red tea brewed with vanilla would be *delicious* in this recipe! It would definitely approximate the vanilla/spice that was in the dark rum I used. If you mean you don't like rum and want to try a different kind of alcohol (although I don't think that's what you mean...), dark tequila, certainly. Or a vanilla vodka.
